‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ in 35mm at the Castro Theatre

Some call “2001: A Space Odyssey” the first intelligent science fiction film, and while I wouldn’t go that far, it certainly represented a maturation beyond Martian invasions, schlocky creature-features and other Cold War fantasies.

Without Stanley Kubrick’s landmark film, playing in 35mm at the Castro Theatre on Thursday, Jan. 12, there might not have been “Arrival,” Denis Villeneuve’s current Oscar contender starring Amy Adams.

In both movies, the methodical investigation into extraterrestrial life forms plays out against the backdrop of a modern human society that itself feels increasingly alien....
